Humane education teaches empathy and compassion towards animals, people, and the environment. This approach not only fosters kindness in the classroom but is relevant to students’ futures in hopes to create a sustainable and humane world for everyone.
Under New York City education laws, public schools are required to provide instruction “in the humane treatment and protection of animals and the importance of the part they play in the economy of nature as well as the necessity of controlling the proliferation of animals which are subsequently abandoned and caused to suffer extreme cruelty.”
Sam and Friend’s programs uses live animals to promote responsible pet ownership and adoption. We teach animal science in order to draw connections between animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
Whether you are planning to implement humane education yourself by having a class pet, or a trip to a zoo; Sam and Friends can provide you the support and necessary resources to have a humane educational experience.
- We can help ensure that your classroom’s study and care of any live animals is appropriate.
- Provide alternatives and teaching aides to zoo trips in the form of animal cams and nature walks/observing NYC wildlife.
- Provide alternatives and resources to animal dissections.
- Interested in becoming a Humane Animal Educator? Sam and Friends is offering a one-on-one mentorship program to enhance your skills and help you gain experience in working with animals and teaching children.
