Han & Friends’ Book Club: September
Thank you so much for signing up for Han and Friends’ book club! Our first meeting day will be September 1st at 6:00 PM and I hope that you can make it! Get your library cards ready because the first book we will be reading is Cat’s People by Tanya Guerrero. Ideally, I would like us to read a new book each month and we will be meeting once every two weeks. Please come to our first meeting, having read 1/3 of the book.
This year after adopting my cat Boba, I have been interested in the world of cat rescue. I recently read a memoir called Poets Square and attended a book discussion event led by LIC Feral Feeders; which gave me the idea to start my own book club. The book stressed a lot about the importance of community which is something that I want to cultivate in my life. You may not know all the people in this club but we are all united by our love for animals. Through the books we will read and talk about; I hope that it will not only deepen your love for animals but also question our relationship with them and inspire us to take action to make the world a better place for them.

Han & Friends’ Book Club: October
It’s my favorite time of the year: Halloween! First, I am super excited for the new movie coming out on October 3rd, Good Boy (2025), directed by Ben Leonberg. It tells the story of a haunted house from the perspective of a dog.
Our book club will have to take a little break this October because I will be traveling to Vermont for a Giant Lantern Puppet Workshop. There I will be helping to build a giant ghost moose puppet. These puppets will be used to draw awareness on how climate change is causing moose to suffer from severe winter tick infestations which causes them extreme hair loss, and a sickly greyish appearance. In current news there are stories and accounts of sightings of “mutant deer with horrifying flesh bubbles,” “outbreak of Frankenstein rabbits with face tentacles,” and “grotesque squirrels with oozing tumors.” Read More Here

Since we are skipping the month of October, I still wanted to give a book recommendation. It is a children’s story called Mousekin’s Golden House written and illustrated by Edna Miller. I fell in love with her stories and illustrations but I couldn’t find much information about her. I did find a delightful quote from her regarding the story.
“As a child I developed a great love of animals. At the zoo in Central Park, I made childish sketches of my favorite animals. The Museum of Natural History was my second home…….The idea for my first book, Mousekin’s Golden House, came to me shortly after Halloween when I had put the family pumpkin outside. One evening I noticed a small, white-footed mouse exploring the jack-o’-lantern for the few seeds it contained. I thought what a fine house it would make for a white-footed mouse who forever discards one home and searches for another.”
